Ly Son Island is a volcanic island 30 km off the coast of Quang Ngai Province, reached by a 30-to-45-minute speedboat from Sa Ky Port. Five extinct craters, garlic fields grown in basalt soil, and some of the clearest water in Vietnam make it unlike any other Vietnamese island. Plan two nights: one for the Big Island volcanoes, one for the turquoise water on Small Island. A day trip is technically possible but leaves zero buffer for weather delays and misses the best seafood dinners entirely.
Ly Son is not a beach resort island. It is a 10 km² volcanic landscape with black cliffs, twisted lava rock formations, coral reefs, and fields that smell like garlic year-round. The population of around 20,000 still earns its living from fishing and farming single-clove garlic in the island's rich volcanic soil. Foreign visitors are rare. Most tourists are young Vietnamese backpackers, and outside peak weekends, you can have entire stretches of coastline to yourself.
The island's main draws are geological, not resort-style. You hike crater rims, snorkel reefs with excellent visibility, ride a motorbike around the 12 km coastal loop, and eat seafood that came out of the water hours ago. If you want a pool and a cocktail bar, go to Phu Quoc. If you want a raw, volcanic island with almost no other foreigners, Ly Son is it.

The only way to reach Ly Son is by speedboat from Sa Ky Port in Quang Ngai Province. Ferries run daily from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, operated by An Vinh Express, Super Bien Dong, and Hoa Binh Super Speedboat. A one-way tourist ticket costs 212,000 VND (~8 USD) as of this year. Phu Quoc Express resumed service on this route in April with vessels holding up to 300 passengers.
The closest airport is Chu Lai (VCL), served by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air from both Hanoi (~1 hour 25 minutes) and Ho Chi Minh City (~1 hour 20 minutes). One-way fares start around 1,500,000 VND (~59 USD) if booked in advance. From Chu Lai Airport, Sa Ky Port is roughly 41 km, or about 1.5 hours by car. There is no public bus from the airport to the port, so arrange a private car or taxi in advance.
If you are already in central Vietnam, Sa Ky Port is about 23 km east of Quang Ngai city center, reachable by taxi in 30 minutes. Quang Ngai is a stop on the Reunification Express train line and is connected by bus to Da Nang (3 hours) and Quy Nhon (3 hours).

Ly Son's 10 km² Big Island can be circled by motorbike in under an hour, but the sights deserve a full day if you stop properly. Small Island (Dao Be) needs a separate half-day trip by boat. Here are the six things worth your time.
The highest point on the island at 149 meters. The crater rim gives a full panorama of the garlic fields, the coastline, and Small Island in the distance. A freshwater lake sits inside the crater, and a national flag pole marks the summit. Go between 10 AM and 2 PM to avoid the selfie crowds, which peak at sunrise and sunset.
A natural lava arch on the northwest coast, formed when molten rock met the ocean and hardened millions of years ago. The arch is about 2.5 meters high. Sunset through the arch is the island's most photographed moment, which means it gets packed. For a quieter experience, go mid-morning instead.
A 400-year-old Buddhist pagoda built inside a cave on the northeast coast, facing the open sea. A Guanyin sculpture guards the entrance. The cave is 24 meters deep. Free entry. Get there by following the winding coastal path from the north of Thoi Loi Mountain.
Small Island is where the swimming actually happens. The water is turquoise, the coral is visible from the surface, and fewer than 100 families live there. Boats depart Big Island around 8:00 AM, cost roughly 80,000 VND (~3 USD) per person, and return around 2:30 PM. You can also hire a private fishing boat for more flexibility. Ly Son has seven temples dedicated to whale worship, a tradition shared by many Vietnamese coastal communities. Homestays and basic motels cluster in the streets north of Ben Dinh port and in the center near the market. Expect a fan room, clean sheets, and not much else. Many are listed only on Vietnamese booking apps (Traveloka VN, Booking.com). Phuoc Loc Guesthouse in Thon Dong village, 6 km from the port, is a quieter alternative with balcony sea views.
Ly Son Pearl Island Hotel and Resort is the island's first 4-star property, with a pool, a 155-meter beach, and rooms starting around 960,000 VND (~38 USD). Muong Thanh Holiday Ly Son, also rated 4 stars, starts at roughly 1,050,000 VND (~41 USD) and sits directly on the beachfront.
ATMs on the island are scarce and unreliable. Bring enough cash for your entire stay. Credit cards are accepted only at the two 4-star hotels. Hotel prices can triple during holiday weekends, especially around the Soldier Replacement Ceremony in April.
Seafood is the reason to eat on Ly Son, and the prices are lower than any coastal tourist town on the mainland. Hit the Ly Son night market for the widest selection.
Garlic salad (Goi tom toi): Raw garlic, shrimp, herbs. The island's signature dish. Ly Son garlic is grown in volcanic basalt soil with seaweed fertilizer, and locals claim it is the best in Vietnam. It is pungent, sharp, and nothing like supermarket garlic.
Huynh De crab (Cua Huynh De): A royal crab the size of an adult's hand, with a bright red shell and sweet, tender meat. It was once a tribute dish for the Nguyen dynasty kings. Fishermen catch it mainly in spring, so availability varies. Expect to pay 300,000-500,000 VND (~12-20 USD) per plate depending on size and season.
Sea urchin (Nhim bien): Grilled, in porridge, or in soup. The texture is soft, the taste is briny-sweet. Abundant from March to August. Cheaper than on the mainland.

Buy garlic to take home: Olvis, a garlic processing facility on the island's southwest, sells single-clove garlic, black garlic, and garlic wine. It is a better buy than the port souvenir stalls, where prices are marked up for departing tourists.
The dry season runs from March to August, with June through August being the hottest and sunniest months, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The rainy season (September to February) brings rough seas that can cancel ferry services for days. If your dates are flexible, visit in March, April, or May for warm weather, calmer seas, and thinner crowds than the peak summer months. Avoid weekends and Vietnamese public holidays year-round. The island's capacity is limited, and weekend crowds from nearby cities fill hotels and pack the ferry at full capacity. Midweek visits are noticeably quieter.
Rent a motorbike from your hotel or from shops near the port. The going rate is about 150,000 VND (~6 USD) per day. The Big Island loop is roughly 12 km with minimal traffic. There are no ride-hailing apps (no Grab, no Xanh SM) on Ly Son. Walking works for the port area and nearby sights, but you need a motorbike or bicycle to reach Thon Dong village and the south coast. Is Ly Son Island worth visiting?
Yes, if you want a volcanic landscape, clear-water snorkeling, and cheap seafood without resort crowds. Ly Son is not a luxury beach destination. It is raw, mostly Vietnamese-speaking, and still developing its tourism infrastructure. That is the appeal. If you need cocktail bars and spa treatments, Phu Quoc or Nha Trang are better fits.
How many days do you need on Ly Son?
Two nights, three days is the recommended minimum. Day one covers Big Island (Thoi Loi Mountain, To Vo Gate, Hang Pagoda, whale temples). Day two goes to Small Island for swimming and snorkeling, plus a seafood dinner back on Big Island. A third day allows for a slower pace, revisiting favorite spots, and a buffer against weather delays.
Can you get to Ly Son from Da Nang or Hoi An?
Not directly by boat. From Da Nang or Hoi An, drive or take a bus south to Quang Ngai (about 2.5 to 3 hours), then continue 23 km east to Sa Ky Port. Alternatively, fly from Da Nang to Chu Lai Airport, though flights on this route are limited and the price difference versus driving is not always worth it.
Is Ly Son safe for foreign tourists?
The island is safe. Crime is low, locals are welcoming, and the main risks are sunburn, seasickness on the ferry, and sharp rocks in the water while swimming. Bring reef shoes for any beach entry on Big Island. Small Island has sandier shores.
