Overview

Tour overview

Our first time in Vietnam tour is the simple way to see both ends of the country in a week. You start with a guided day in Hanoi, go south to Ninh Binh for a rowed sampan at Tam Coc and a village bike ride, then sleep in a cabin on Ha Long Bay. On day 5 you fly to Ho Chi Minh City with the ticket in the price, so no day is lost to the road.

The south adds a boat day in the Mekong Delta, with the orchards of Unicorn Island, a rowed sampan on the canals and a bike ride round the village. Groups are up to 12, a local guide who speaks English leads days 2, 3 and 6, and you pick 3-star, 4-star or 5-star hotels when you book.

Itinerary

Day by day itinerary

Day 1Landing at Noi Bai Airport and a first evening in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Our driver waits just outside customs at Noi Bai with your name on a sign. The road into the city takes about 45 minutes, and rooms are ready from 2:00 PM; arrive earlier and reception keeps your bags. Share your flight number with us when booking and the pickup is timed to your landing.

The rest of the day is yours (optional, at your own cost). The Old Quarter is the easiest place to begin: a grid of narrow streets named after the trades once sold on them, with street food on almost every corner. The Hanoi team’s one tip for first-timers: cross the road at a slow, steady walk and the motorbikes will go around you.

Day 2Hanoi in a day: the Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo Prison

Your guide picks you up for a full day of the capital’s landmarks. The morning is the Ba Dinh district: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the stilt house where he lived and worked, and the One Pillar Pagoda, seen from outside. From there you drive to the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which covers the 54 ethnic groups of the country with full-size houses in its garden.

A Vietnamese midday meal at a local restaurant follows, with vegetarian dishes on the table. In the afternoon you see Tran Quoc Pagoda on an island in West Lake, the oldest in Hanoi, then the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as the first university, and finish at Hoa Lo Prison, built by the French and later used for American pilots.

Day 3Ninh Binh: Hoa Lu, a rowed sampan at Tam Coc and a bike ride through the villages

You leave Hanoi early for Ninh Binh, about two hours south on the expressway. The first stop is Hoa Lu, capital of Vietnam in the tenth century, where two temples honour the Dinh and Le kings who ruled from here before the court moved to Hanoi. The walls are gone, but the setting, a flat valley closed in by limestone, shows why it was chosen.

After a midday break by the river you step into a sampan at Tam Coc wharf, and a local rower takes you up the Ngo Dong River, between rice fields and under three low caves cut through the rock. Later you get on a bicycle for an easy ride along country lanes through the paddies and villages, mostly flat and at your own pace, before the drive back to Hanoi.

Day 4Ha Long Bay: board Le Journey Cruise at Tuan Chau and kayak between the islands

An air-conditioned shuttle bus collects you from your hotel and crosses the Red River Delta on the expressway, reaching Tuan Chau pier in about two and a half hours. You board the boat and sail out among the limestone islands of the bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

In the afternoon the boat stops in calm water, where you can take a kayak out between the rocks or swim. After dark the crew run squid fishing from the deck or a cooking demonstration, both included in the cruise, or you can sit outside and watch the anchor lights of the other boats.

Day 5Sunrise and a cave on the bay, then the flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City

Get up early for sunrise from the sundeck, when the islands come out of the mist one by one. Later in the morning the cruise guide takes you ashore and through a large limestone cave hung with stalactites and stalagmites, and back on board you clear your cabin as the boat heads for the harbour.

The shuttle bus returns you to Hanoi. Until it is time for the airport you can rest in a cafe or a hotel lounge, then our driver takes you to Noi Bai for the flight south, about two hours and included in the price. Another driver meets you at Tan Son Nhat and brings you to your hotel in the evening.

Day 6Mekong Delta: the four islands at My Tho, a rowed sampan and a cycle round Tan Thach

A drive of under two hours brings you to My Tho on the Tien River, one of the main arms of the Mekong. A motor boat takes you out past the four islands named Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix and Tortoise, and lands on Unicorn Island, where you walk through the fruit orchards, taste what is in season and listen to a short performance of southern folk music by local singers.

Next you sit in a hand-rowed sampan for a slow passage along Thoi Son canal under the water palms, then stop at a family bee farm for honey tea and coconut candy. The midday meal is at a restaurant in a riverside garden. In the afternoon you can cycle round Tan Thach village or lie in a hammock, before the boat and the car return you to Saigon.

Day 7A last morning in Saigon and the transfer to Tan Son Nhat Airport

The morning is free until our driver collects you from the hotel for Tan Son Nhat. Rooms must be cleared by 12:00 PM, and depending on your flight time there is room for a walk around the streets near your stay or a visit to a nearby market for souvenirs: coffee, lacquerware and the conical hats that pack flat (optional, at your own cost).

The private transfer drops you at departures in time for your flight home, and the tour ends there.

  • Your trip begins at Noi Bai Airport (HAN) in Hanoi, where our driver waits outside customs in the international arrivals hall with your name on a sign. It ends on day 7 with a drop-off at Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City, so book your international flights into the north and out of the south.
  • Hotel rooms are ready from 2:00 PM and must be left by 12:00 PM. Send us your flight times when you book so every airport transfer is timed to them.
  • Hotels by class, or a hotel of the same standard: 3-star: Golden Rooster Hotel in Hanoi, Queen Ann Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City; 4-star: Golden Legend Palace Hotel in Hanoi, Alagon City Hotel & Spa in Ho Chi Minh City; 5-star: Apricot Hotel in Hanoi, The Myst Dong Khoi in Ho Chi Minh City. On Ha Long Bay you sleep on Le Journey Cruise, or on the 5-star Ambassador Cruise.

  • Day 1 after the airport pickup and the morning of day 7 have no guided programme, so plan your own time in the Old Quarter and in Saigon.
  • Pack closed shoes for the two bike rides, swimwear and a towel for the bay, and a hat and sun cream for the Mekong boat day.
  • Hanoi and the bay are cool from December to February, so bring a light jacket for the deck; Saigon is warm all year.
  • Vegetarian and vegan meals can be arranged: tell us when you book.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the tour ends.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this a good tour for a first time in Vietnam?

Yes, that is what it is built for. In seven days you see Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay in the north, then Saigon and the Mekong Delta in the south. A local guide leads the sightseeing days, drivers meet you at every airport and the flight between the two halves is included, so there is nothing to work out yourself.

Where does the tour start and end?

It starts with a pickup at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi on day 1 and ends on day 7 with a drop-off at Tan Son Nhat, the airport of Ho Chi Minh City. Book an international flight into Hanoi and out of Saigon, or ask us about adding nights at either end. See our guide to the Vietnam e-visa before you fly.

Is the flight from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City included?

Yes. The economy ticket for the flight on day 5 is in the price, with 20 kg of checked baggage. The shuttle bus brings you back from the bay to Hanoi, a private car takes you to Noi Bai and another driver meets you at Tan Son Nhat. The flight takes about two hours.

How much cycling is there, and do I have to do it?

Two short rides, both on flat lanes at a gentle pace: through the villages of Ninh Binh on day 3 and round Tan Thach village in the Mekong on day 6. Neither is a sporting ride, and on day 6 the listed alternative is a hammock. Children who can ride a bike manage both.

Is this a private or a group tour?

It is a group tour for 1 to 12 people, guided in English, and it departs most days of the year. Days 1 and 7 and the evenings are your own time. If you would rather have a car and guide to yourselves, ask us for a private price on the same programme.

Can we stay in better hotels?

Yes. The price of US$658 is based on 3-star rooms at Golden Rooster Hotel in Hanoi and Queen Ann Hotel in Saigon, with a cabin on Le Journey Cruise. You can choose 4-star hotels (Golden Legend Palace, Alagon City Hotel & Spa) or 5-star ones (Apricot Hotel, The Myst Dong Khoi, with Ambassador Cruise) instead, and we quote the difference on request.
