This screening is designed specifically for patients with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is a microvascular complication that affects approximately 1 in 3 people with diabetes and is the most frequent cause of preventable blindness in working-age adults. The condition develops over time and is associated with poor control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids. The longer someone has had diabetes and the poorer their control, the higher the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye. In the early stages there are often no noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screening is essential for anyone living with diabetes. As the condition progresses, it can cause blurred vision, dark spots, and, if untreated, permanent vision loss.
The screening uses fundus photography to capture a detailed image of the retina, slit-lamp examination and ophthalmoscopy to check for abnormal blood vessel growth or leaking, and intraocular pressure measurement to assess glaucoma risk, which is also more common in diabetes patients. Detecting changes early allows treatment to begin before significant vision loss occurs.
You check in and an Optometrist performs visual acuity and refractive tests. Eye drops may be applied to dilate your pupils for a clearer view of the retina. Fundus photography and slit-lamp examination follow. An Ophthalmologist then reviews all findings with you in English and recommends next steps if any retinal changes are detected. The entire process takes approximately 1 to 2 hours. Please note that pupil dilation may blur your vision for 4 to 6 hours afterwards, so arrange transport rather than driving yourself.
