If you have had a normal ECG but still feel concerned about your heart health, this screening goes much deeper. A resting ECG checks your heart rhythm at one point in time. It cannot show plaque building up inside your arteries.
Coronary artery disease develops when plaque, made up of cholesterol, fat, calcium, and other substances, builds up in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Over time, this narrows the arteries and restricts blood flow.
MDCT Coronary Angiography with Calcium Scoring is the centrepiece of this screening. A CT scanner takes detailed cross-sectional images of your coronary arteries after a small amount of contrast dye is injected. The Calcium Score quantifies how much calcium has accumulated in your artery walls, which is a well-established predictor of future heart events. Unlike traditional catheter angiography, this is entirely non-invasive: no incision, no catheter threaded into the heart, and no overnight stay.
Echocardiography uses ultrasound to evaluate how well your heart is pumping, the condition of your heart valves, and whether any structural changes have occurred.
ECG records the heart's electrical activity to check for rhythm or conduction problems that may accompany coronary disease.
Together, these three tests give the Cardiologist a comprehensive picture of both the structure and function of your heart and the condition of the arteries supplying it.
On arrival you are registered and guided through each test in sequence. The ECG and echocardiography are quick and painless. For the MDCT Coronary Angiography, a small IV line is placed for contrast dye, and the scan itself takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes while you lie still and follow breathing instructions. Patients over 70, and those with kidney disease or diabetes, will have a creatinine blood test beforehand to ensure safe use of contrast dye. Your Cardiologist then reviews all imaging and test results with you in person, in English, explaining what was found and what it means for your health going forward.
