This Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi heads 120 km south to the river valleys and limestone peaks often called "Ha Long Bay on land". Each of the six packages is built from the same three parts: a morning visit, a boat trip after lunch and, if you want it, the climb to Mua Cave.

In the morning you either cycle through the villages to the temples of King Dinh and King Le at Hoa Lu, the old royal capital, or ride an electric car around the Bai Dinh pagoda complex. After lunch, a rowing boat takes you through Trang An, the UNESCO-listed landscape where parts of Kong: Skull Island were filmed, or along the Ngo Dong River at Tam Coc, past rice fields and through caves. Mua Cave closes the day with a view over the whole valley. It suits first-time visitors who have one day for the countryside around Hanoi.

07:15 Drive south from Hanoi

About 120 km to Ninh Binh, with a 20-minute rest stop around 09:00.

10:30 Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh

Hoa Lu packages cycle through the villages, or stay on the bus, to the temples of King Dinh and King Le. Bai Dinh packages tour the pagoda complex by electric car.

12:15 Lunch

A break at a local restaurant before the boat trip.

13:30 Trang An or Tam Coc by boat

Trang An: 2 hours through caves and past temples on the water. Tam Coc: 1.5 hours along the Ngo Dong River through rice fields and three caves.

16:00 Mua Cave or free time

Mua Cave packages climb nearly 500 steps up Lying Dragon Mountain. Other packages have free time.

17:30 Return to Hanoi

About two hours back to the Old Quarter.

How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?

About 120 km south, roughly two hours by bus each way, with a 20-minute rest stop on the way down. That leaves around five hours in Ninh Binh for the morning visit, lunch, the boat trip and, on some packages, Mua Cave.

Trang An or Tam Coc: which boat trip should I choose?

Trang An is a 2-hour ride through a UNESCO-listed area with more caves and small temples on the water. Tam Coc is 1.5 hours on the Ngo Dong River and is more about the rice fields. Both are rowed by local boat drivers.

How hard is the Mua Cave climb?

It is nearly 500 stone steps to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain, steep in places, and the stop lasts about an hour and a quarter. The view over Tam Coc is the reward. If you prefer not to climb, choose a package without Mua Cave.

Which package has the least walking?

Bai Dinh & Trang An. You tour the pagoda complex by electric car and spend two hours seated in a rowing boat. Hoa Lu packages include village cycling, although you can stay on the bus, and Mua Cave packages add the climb.

Are there vegetarian options at lunch?

Yes. The buffet of Ninh Binh dishes at a local restaurant has vegetarian options in every package. Drinks at lunch are extra and can be bought at the restaurant.
