The Hanoi Train: Heritage Train Day Trip to Do Temple, Bac Ninh

Hanoi to Tu Son (Bac Ninh), Vietnam

About

For a hundred years, trains have rattled out of Hanoi Station and across Long Bien Bridge. This half-day trip puts you on the newest of them: the Hanoi Train, a double-decker heritage train that began running in September 2025, its five carriages named after the old gates of the city. You sit by a wide window with the Red River below, while musicians in the carriage play quan ho, ca tru and cheo, three styles of northern folk music most visitors never get to hear live.

About forty minutes later the train pulls into Tu Son, in Bac Ninh, the old land of Kinh Bac. A shuttle takes you to Do Temple, where the eight kings of the Ly dynasty are worshipped, and the founder of Thang Long was born nearby. In the water pavilion, local singers in traditional dress perform quan ho, the call-and-response love songs listed by UNESCO, before the train brings you back to Hanoi. Choose the morning or the afternoon departure; it is an easy, unusual way to see the countryside beyond the city in just three and a half hours. Back by five on the afternoon train? It is the right time to join our Hanoi street food tour, and our Hanoi travel guide has more ideas.

You can also book this trip on our TourRadar page. It is the same heritage train journey, arranged by the same Sondax Travel team.

Frequently asked questions

Morning or afternoon: which Hanoi heritage train should I take?

The morning train leaves at 08:00 and is back around 11:30, cooler in summer and leaving your afternoon free. The 13:30 train is back around 17:00, a good fit if you arrive in Hanoi the same morning or want to go straight on to dinner.

What happens at Tu Son?

A shuttle takes you from the station to Do Temple, where the Ly kings who founded Thang Long are worshipped. You have about an hour and a half to walk the temple and watch quan ho singers perform in the water pavilion, then return to the train.

Do I need my passport?

Yes, please bring it. ID is checked when passengers board the Hanoi Train, and you may not be allowed on without it. A photo on your phone is not always accepted, so carry the original.

Is this the same as Hanoi Train Street?

No. On Train Street you sit at a café and watch a train pass. Here you ride a heritage train yourself, from Hanoi Station across Long Bien Bridge to Bac Ninh, with music on board. Many travellers do both.

Is it suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. The carriages are air-conditioned with seats by the window, the walking at Do Temple is short and flat, and the whole trip lasts about three and a half hours. All ages are welcome.
