Hanoi Day Tour: Coffee Class, Michelin Lunch, Bia Hoi & Train Street

Hanoi, Vietnam

About

Some days in Hanoi are for temples and museums. This one is not. This Hanoi day tour follows the rhythm the city actually lives by: coffee in the morning, a long lunch, a cold beer on a plastic stool in the afternoon, and a last drink as the train squeezes down Train Street at dusk. No checklist of sights, no rushing, just a day spent the way Hanoians spend theirs, in a group of no more than five.

You start with your hands on the equipment at a coffee workshop, brewing six Vietnamese coffees with a barista: salt coffee, egg coffee, coconut coffee, a pour-over, the original brown coffee and a coffee cocktail. Lunch is at a Michelin-recognised restaurant, where you pick one of five Hanoi classics, from pho and bun cha to eel glass noodles. In the afternoon you pull up a low stool at a bia hoi corner, where fresh draught beer is how this city unwinds, and the day ends at a café on Train Street with a coffee or juice on us and time to wander the neighbourhood on your own.

Only have a few hours? Join our Hanoi coffee workshop on its own, or spend an evening eating your way through the alleys on our Hanoi street food tour. You can also book this day on our TourRadar page; it is the same tour, run by the same Sondax Travel team.

Frequently asked questions

How is this Hanoi day tour different from your street food tour or coffee workshop?

The street food tour is a three-hour walk from stall to stall, mostly about eating. The coffee workshop is a short hands-on class. This is a slower full day that strings together a coffee workshop, a sit-down lunch, bia hoi and Train Street, for travellers who want one easy day of local life.

Do I have to drink beer?

Not at all. Bia hoi is about the atmosphere as much as the beer: low stools, peanuts, conversations spilling onto the pavement. If you do not drink alcohol, tell us and you will get a soft drink or juice instead. Children aged 6 and over are welcome on the tour.

I don’t drink much coffee. Will I enjoy the workshop?

Most people do, because Vietnamese coffee is not just strong black coffee. Egg coffee tastes almost like dessert, coconut coffee is closer to a smoothie, and you only need to sip each one. You can share cups with your group.

Will I see a train on Train Street?

Trains run on a timetable that changes, so we cannot promise one passes while you are there. The café staff know when a train is due and will call you back from the tracks in time; either way the street itself, with its houses a few steps from the rails, is worth the visit.

What is the Michelin-recognised lunch like?

It is a simple Hanoi restaurant recognised by the Michelin Guide for one or two dishes done very well, not a formal dining room. You choose one of five classics: pho, bun cha, eel glass noodles, banh cuon or pho xao.
