Hai Phong Day Trip from Hanoi by Train: Markets & Local Food

Hai Phong, Vietnam (from Hanoi)

About

Ask anyone in Hanoi where to eat well and sooner or later they will say Hai Phong. The port city two and a half hours east by train is where Hanoians go for crab noodle soup thick with paste, banh mi so thin you eat it by the handful, and seafood that came off the boats that morning. Few foreign travellers make the trip, which is exactly why this day trip is worth it.

You ride there on the local train, soft seats and open countryside rolling past the window, then walk into the noise of Sat or Cat Bi market with your guide, past fish baskets, herb sellers and women frying banh beo. Between bowls of banh da cua and spicy bun ca cay, you visit Du Hang Pagoda, one of the oldest in the city, the villa where Vietnam’s last emperor spent his summers, and the yellow French-era Opera House. The afternoon is a slow string of snacks: stir-fried razor clams, sticky sui din in ginger syrup, a cold coconut dessert and a coconut coffee, before the evening train back to Hanoi.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hai Phong worth a day trip from Hanoi?

If you love food, yes. Hai Phong is famous across Vietnam for its crab noodle soup, skinny banh mi and seafood, and it sees far fewer tourists than Ha Long or Ninh Binh. You get a real working port city, its markets and French-era streets, in one easy day.

What is the train ride like?

It is the regular local train, not a luxury tourist train: soft air-conditioned seats, big windows and about two and a half hours of countryside each way. Many travellers say the ride itself, watching village life go by, is one of the best parts of the day.

How much will I eat?

A lot. Lunch is a run of Hai Phong classics and the afternoon is a string of snacks, from razor clams to coconut desserts and coffee. Have a light breakfast and come hungry. Vegetarian, vegan and halal versions are available if you tell us when you book.

Do you pick me up at my hotel?

Yes, if you book the hotel pickup package: our driver collects you from your Old Quarter hotel from 07:30 and brings you back to central Hanoi in the evening. On the station package you meet the guide at Hanoi Railway Station at 09:00 and finish there around 21:00.

Can children join?

Children aged 6 and over are welcome. The day is long, about 12 hours with five hours on the train, and involves some walking in busy markets, so it suits kids who enjoy trying new food and do not mind a full day out.
