The Uncomfortable Truth About Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is one of the three most common cancers in men. Most cases are diagnosed in men 65 and older. Here is the part that catches people off guard: some prostate cancers grow so slowly that they may never cause harm, while others progress aggressively and can be fatal within a few years. There is no way to tell which type you have without screening.

The good news is that prostate cancer found early is highly treatable. At FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, this focused screening combines a PSA blood test, a transrectal ultrasound, and a urologist consultation for a fraction of what the same workup costs in Singapore, Australia, or the UK. Sondax handles scheduling, transport, and English-language support.

Who Should Get Screened

This programme is designed for men over 50. You do not need symptoms to qualify or benefit. In fact, the whole point is to screen before symptoms appear.

Consider screening especially if you have:

  • A family history of prostate cancer (father, brother, or son diagnosed)
  • African or Caribbean heritage, which carries a statistically higher risk
  • Obesity or a sedentary lifestyle
  • Previous borderline PSA results that were never followed up

FV Hospital recommends repeating the screening every year.

What Each Test Tells Your Doctor

PSA blood test: PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous prostate cells. Higher-than-normal levels can suggest cancer, but they can also result from benign enlargement, infection, or inflammation. The PSA number is a starting point, not a verdict.

Transrectal prostate ultrasound: A small ultrasound probe inserted through the rectum produces detailed images of the prostate gland. The Urologist looks for changes in size, shape, and texture that may indicate abnormal growths. It takes only a few minutes and is done in a private setting.

Urologist consultation: Your specialist interprets the PSA result and ultrasound images together, considers your age and medical history, and gives you a clear picture of where you stand. If anything warrants further investigation, the Urologist will explain the options, which may include active surveillance, additional imaging, or biopsy.

What to Expect on the Day

You arrive at FV Hospital, check in, and a blood sample is drawn for the PSA test. You are then taken to a private room for the transrectal ultrasound. The probe is small and lubricated; the procedure is brief and the team prioritises your comfort and privacy throughout. Afterwards, you sit down with a Urologist who walks you through everything in English: what the PSA number means, what the ultrasound images show, and whether any follow-up is needed. The entire visit typically takes 1 to 2 hours.

One practical note: do not empty your bladder before the examination, as a partially full bladder improves ultrasound image quality.

A Common Question: Should I Just Get the Full Wellness Programme Instead?

FV Hospital's Wellness Check-up Programme for Men (from USD 1,565) already includes a urology consultation, endo-rectal prostate ultrasound, and both PSA and free PSA (fPSA) markers, plus 50+ other tests covering cardiovascular, metabolic, cancer, and STD screening. If you are due for a complete health check-up anyway, the Wellness Programme covers prostate screening along with everything else in a single day.

This standalone Prostate Cancer Screening (from USD 82) is the right fit if you want a focused, quick check specifically on your prostate health, without the time commitment or cost of a comprehensive programme. Contact Sondax and we will help you choose.

Important Notes

All prices are per person and subject to change without prior notice. Other exams and additional tests are not included in this programme. Prostate cancer screening should be repeated annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have no symptoms at all. Should I still get screened?
Most prostate cancers produce no symptoms in the early stages. By the time symptoms appear, such as difficulty urinating or bone pain, the cancer may have progressed. Screening picks up problems while they are still small and treatable. If you are over 50, annual screening is a straightforward way to stay ahead of it.
What does the transrectal ultrasound feel like? Should I be worried?
The ultrasound involves a small probe inserted into the rectum. It can feel uncomfortable, but it is not painful and takes only a few minutes. The examination is done in a private room by an experienced specialist, and the team is focused on your comfort and dignity. Many men say the anticipation was worse than the procedure itself.
My PSA came back elevated. Does that mean I have cancer?
Not necessarily. PSA levels can rise due to several reasons besides cancer, including benign prostate enlargement, infection, inflammation, or even recent physical activity. An elevated PSA is a flag that warrants further investigation, not a diagnosis. Your Urologist will look at the PSA number alongside your ultrasound images, age, and medical history to determine the next step.
How often should I repeat this screening?
FV Hospital recommends annual prostate cancer screening for men over 50. If your Urologist identifies risk factors or borderline results, they may recommend more frequent monitoring.
Can I combine this with a general health check-up?
Yes. The Wellness Check-up Programme for Men at FV Hospital already includes a urology consultation, endo-rectal prostate ultrasound, and both PSA and free PSA (fPSA) markers, alongside 50+ other tests. If you want a full-body assessment plus prostate screening in one visit, that programme covers both. Contact Sondax to decide which approach fits your needs.
