Overview
Tour overview
This Vietnam coffee tour fits Ha Long Bay and the coffee hills of Son La into five days, starting in Hanoi and ending in Son La. You spend one day on the water among the limestone islands, then head into the northwest mountains for two nights and a full day on a coffee company's farms, following the bean from the growing areas to roasting and brewing.
Hanoi has the first two nights. A local driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Noi Bai and takes you into the city, and on day one a local guide leads an Old Quarter food and coffee walk of three to three and a half hours, from a traditional phin to newer specialty brews, with street food on the way. Day two is a Ha Long Bay day cruise with Surprise Cave, a kayak or bamboo boat at Luon Cave and Titop Island, and you sleep back in Hanoi. On day three a private car takes you to Son La, and the coffee day covers the farms and growing areas of Phuc Sinh Group, a hands-on session where you make a drink of your choice, a food and coffee tasting in a local ethnic village and a roasting and brewing session on the experimental hill with local experts.
The pace is easy and groups run from 1 to 20 travellers. The tour ends in Son La on day 5, and the trip back to Hanoi is not included. It suits coffee drinkers who want to see a farm at work, families, and anyone who wants Ha Long Bay without a night on a boat. Our Ha Long Bay travel guide is useful reading before the cruise day.
Itinerary
Day by day itinerary
Day 1Arrival in Hanoi and an Old Quarter walk for coffee and street food
A local driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Noi Bai International Airport for the 27 km or so into the city and your Hanoi hotel. Check-in is from around 2:00 PM.
Today's included food and coffee walk takes three to three and a half hours with a local guide. It opens at St. Joseph’s, the cathedral the French finished in 1886, with a short talk on its history, then follows the Old Quarter backstreets past old houses and markets. On the way you compare a traditional phin coffee, dripped through a small metal filter, with newer specialty brews, meet the independent baristas and café owners behind them, and eat street food at the stalls locals favour.
Day 2Ha Long Bay by day boat: two caves, Titop Island and a sundeck party
An air-conditioned shuttle bus picks you up at your hotel for the two-and-a-half-hour expressway run east to the coast. The name Ha Long means “descending dragon”: in the legend, dragons flew down to guard the coast, spitting out jewels that hardened into the islands. UNESCO inscribed the bay in 1994, and since September 2023 the World Heritage site has also covered the Cat Ba archipelago further south.
Lunch on board is a buffet, with the limestone islets all around. The cruise makes three stops. Sung Sot takes its name from the Vietnamese for “astonished”: steps lead up from the landing to the mouth of the cave, and a path runs through chambers hung with stalactites. At Luon Cave you paddle a kayak, or let a bamboo boat carry you, under a low arch in the rock into the lagoon on the far side. On Titop Island the choice is yours: time on the beach, or the climb to the summit, about 110 metres above the water, for a view down over the anchored boats and the islands beyond.
As the light goes, the sundeck turns into a sunset party with tea, cakes and music. Count on a long day, around six hours on the water and roughly 13 hours door to door, ending at the same hotel as last night.
Day 3West from Hanoi on National Road 6 into the coffee country of Son La
The morning is free in Hanoi. In the afternoon a private car takes you west to Son La province, a drive of about 5 to 6 hours. The usual road, National Road 6, winds up through Hoa Binh and crosses the Moc Chau plateau, tea and dairy country more than 1,000 metres above sea level, before it drops towards the Arabica farms you visit tomorrow.
Once you have checked in, nothing else is planned. Dinner is not included, but the hotel will prepare one if you order it at least 12 hours ahead (optional, 300,000 VND per person, paid locally).
Day 4Son La farms: brew your own cup, a village tasting, then roasting
Coffee from Son La has carried a protected geographical indication, Vietnam’s official mark of origin, since 2017, and today you see where it comes from. From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM an English-speaking guide takes you through the farms and growing areas of Phuc Sinh Group and tells you how the company started and how it runs its work in the province. The harvest lasts from about September to February, so in those months the branches carry ripe red cherries.
Then it is your turn: in a hands-on session you prepare one coffee drink of your choice and taste it. Son La Arabica is known for a clean acidity, mild bitterness and a fruity aroma, and a cup you made yourself is a good way to notice them. In a local ethnic village you also taste the village’s own food and coffee.
From 2:00 to 5:00 PM you are up on the experimental hill for a roasting and brewing session with local coffee experts, seeing for yourself how heat and brewing method change what ends up in the cup.
Day 5The tour ends in Son La: onward travel at your own pace
There are no visits today: the tour ends at the hotel in Son La on the morning of day 5. The trip back to Hanoi is not included in the price. If you want a car for it, ask us when you book and we arrange it at extra cost; the drive takes about as long as the one on day 3. You can also make your own way to your next stop.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What coffee experiences does this Vietnam coffee tour include?
Two, both in the price. On day one a local guide walks you through Hanoi’s Old Quarter for phin coffee, specialty brews and street food. Day four in Son La covers the farms of Phuc Sinh Group, a drink you make yourself, a food and coffee tasting in an ethnic village and a roasting and brewing session on the experimental hill with local experts.
Is the Hanoi coffee and street food walk included in the price?
Yes. The walk on day one is part of the tour: about 3 to 3.5 hours with a local guide, starting at St. Joseph’s Cathedral and covering phin and specialty coffee, street food and the Old Quarter markets. If you would rather make the drinks yourself, our Hanoi coffee workshop is a hands-on class you can book on its own.
Do we stay overnight on a boat in Ha Long Bay?
No. Ha Long Bay is a day cruise on day two, with Surprise Cave, a kayak or bamboo boat at Luon Cave, Titop Island and a sunset party on deck. The shuttle bus then brings you back to Hanoi, and you spend that night in the same Hanoi hotel as the first.
Does the tour end in Son La or in Hanoi?
In Son La. The tour finishes at the hotel there on the morning of day 5, and the drive back to Hanoi, about 5 to 6 hours, is not included in the price. Ask us when you book if you want a car for it, at extra cost, or travel on by yourself.
Is it a group tour, and how fit do I need to be?
It is a group tour for 1 to 20 travellers, rated low intensity. The walking is light: the paths inside Surprise Cave, the farm and growing areas in Son La, and the climb on Titop Island, which you can swap for time on the beach. Most of the effort is sitting in the car or bus between Hanoi, the coast and Son La.
Can children join this tour?
Yes, all ages are welcome. Travellers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and an adult makes the booking. On the cruise day younger children can ride the bamboo boat at Luon Cave instead of paddling a kayak, and the climb on Titop Island is optional.
Which hotels do we stay in?
Two nights in Hanoi and two in Son La. In Hanoi you choose the class when you book: Golden Rooster Hotel (3-star), Golden Legend Palace Hotel (4-star) or Apricot Hotel (5-star). In Son La every class stays at Phuc Sinh Mountain Hill, a 3-star hotel. A hotel of the same standard may be used if one is full.
