Overview
Tour overview
This Hoi An food tour keeps you in one town for five days and builds the trip around what people here cook and eat. You sleep in Hoi An every night, and both guided days are about food: a market morning with your chef, a basket boat at Cam Thanh and a class where you cook seven local dishes, then an evening on foot through the Ancient Town tasting banh mi, cao lau and more.
Between them sits the Hoi An Memories Show, an open-air performance on the river with craft stations to try beforehand. The Marble Mountains and Son Tra fit into day 2; days 3 and 4 are free until evening.
Itinerary
Day by day itinerary
Day 1Arrive at Da Nang airport and settle into Hoi An
Your driver is waiting at Da Nang International Airport and takes you south along the coast to Hoi An, a ride of about 45 minutes. Nothing is scheduled once you arrive, so the day belongs to you.
Ships from China, Japan and Europe once anchored at Hoi An, and the old town they left behind, a UNESCO site since 1999, is a small grid of wooden shophouses, assembly halls and lanes running down to the Thu Bon River. If you have energy after the flight, walk it before the lanterns come on, or sit by the water and watch the boats (optional, at your own cost). The first food day starts tomorrow.
Day 2Hoi An Market with the chef, basket boats at Cam Thanh and a seven-dish cooking class, then the Marble Mountains and Son Tra
The chef meets you at Hoi An Market and you shop together for the herbs, fish and vegetables you will cook. A boat then carries you down the river through the water coconut palms to Cam Thanh, where a round bamboo basket boat takes you along the palm channels.
At the cooking school you make seven dishes at your own station: green papaya salad, Hoi An spring rolls, the local rice pancake, aubergine with spring onion oil, clams grilled with egg, fish in a clay pot with rice, and fruit to finish. You eat what you made and keep the recipe booklet. Our chefs say the clay pot fish is the one most guests cook again at home.
In the afternoon you drive north to the Marble Mountains, five hills with Buddhist and Hindu grottoes cut into the rock, and descend into Am Phu Cave, a walk through the underworld. The day ends at Linh Ung Pagoda on Son Tra, below the white Lady Buddha, before the drive back.
Day 3A free day in Hoi An, then the Hoi An Memories Show and its craft villages
The day is yours until the late afternoon. Common choices (all optional, extra cost): a morning on the sand at An Bang Beach, east of the old town; the Precious Heritage Museum, where the photographer Réhahn shows portraits and costumes of Vietnam's ethnic groups; a bicycle ride to the villages across the river; a Vietnamese coffee workshop; or a spa treatment.
From 5 pm your driver takes you to the show park on the river, where you have the run of the mini heritage villages and can try the hands-on craft stations before the performance. The Hoi An Memories Show itself runs from 7:30 to 8:45 pm: an outdoor stage the size of a street, a cast of hundreds and a story that follows the town from its days as a trading port. Your ticket is in the price, and you are back in the old town before the lanterns go out.
Day 4Free day in Hoi An and an evening street food walk through the Ancient Town
Another open day. Hoi An is known for made-to-measure clothes, and visiting the tailors today leaves time for a fitting before you fly; a boat on the river, the markets and the cafes along the water are the other usual choices (all optional, extra cost).
In the evening a short transfer drops you at the edge of the Ancient Town and your food guide takes over on foot, through the lanes and the food markets, with six or more stops. You taste banh mi from a street cart; cao lau, the thick noodle only made in Hoi An, with pork, greens and a little broth; com ga, turmeric rice with shredded chicken and herbs; grilled pork rolled in rice paper; and banh bot loc, tapioca dumplings filled with shrimp or mung bean. The brave can add a balut egg or a grilled chicken egg. Bottled water is included, and the guide explains how people here order, share and eat.
Day 5Last morning in Hoi An and the transfer to Da Nang airport
The final morning is free until your driver comes. If your flight is late in the day, use it for a last walk through the early streets, a Vietnamese coffee by the river and a final round of the shops for souvenirs (optional, at your own cost).
The transfer back to Da Nang International Airport takes about 45 minutes, and the tour ends there. If you would like more time in the centre of the country, we can add nights in Hoi An or Da Nang, or a day trip to My Son or Hue before you fly home.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How is this Hoi An food tour different from a one-evening street food walk?
It gives food five days instead of two hours. You shop at the market with a chef and cook seven Hoi An dishes on day 2, eat your way through the Ancient Town with a food guide on day 4, and have two free days in between to find your own favourites, with the Hoi An Memories Show and the Marble Mountains as the culture side of the trip.
Where does the tour start and finish?
Both ends are Da Nang International Airport, about 30 km up the coast from Hoi An. A driver collects you at arrivals on day 1 and returns you for your departure on day 5. Flights to Da Nang are not in the price, so book your own, and tell us the arrival and departure times when you reserve.
Is it a group tour, and is a guide with us every day?
It runs as a small group of 1 to 20 people, and one booking is enough for it to go ahead. It is partially guided: a chef and guide are with you for the whole of day 2, and a food guide leads the walk on the evening of day 4. The rest of the time you are free in Hoi An, with transfers arranged.
Which meals are included?
Breakfast on days 2 to 5, the lunch you cook yourself on day 2 and the street food tastings on day 4, which count as dinner. The other meals are at your own cost, and Hoi An is an easy town for that: a bowl of noodles or a banh mi in the old town costs very little.
What happens at the Hoi An Memories Show?
It is an outdoor performance staged on the river each evening, with a cast of hundreds and a set built to the scale of the old port. Your ticket covers the main show from 7:30 to 8:45 pm and entry from 5 pm to the heritage villages and craft stations in the park, where you can try the crafts yourself before it starts.
Can we bring children?
Yes, all ages are welcome and the pace is low. Children usually enjoy the basket boat and the cooking class most, and the show is a long sit but a loud and colourful one. The steps at the Marble Mountains and the descent into Am Phu Cave are the only physical parts, and both can be taken slowly.
