Tour overview

This central Vietnam itinerary answers one question: what do you do with five days in the middle of the country? Our answer is to sleep in Da Nang every night and head out in a new direction each day. South first, to the caves of the Marble Mountains, the Lady Buddha on Son Tra and a basket boat at Cam Thanh, with the evening in Hoi An. Then up by cable car to Ba Na Hills for the Golden Bridge. Then north over the Hai Van Pass to Hue for Khai Dinh Tomb, the Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda.

Days 2, 3 and 4 are guided in English with transport and entrance fees arranged; days 1 and 5 are free. You never pack a bag mid-trip.

Itinerary

Day by day itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Da Nang, the base for all five days

Your driver is waiting at Da Nang International Airport, which sits close to the city centre, so the ride in is short. Da Nang is the largest city on the central coast, with the Han River running through the middle and a long sand beach on its eastern edge. Nothing is scheduled today.

If you have time, walk the riverside to the Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire and water on weekend evenings, or find a seafood place near My Khe beach (both optional, at your own cost). The three guided days start tomorrow.

Day 2Marble Mountains, the Lady Buddha on Son Tra, a basket boat at Cam Thanh and an evening in Hoi An

The first guided day covers the ground between Da Nang and Hoi An. You start at the Marble Mountains, five limestone outcrops just south of the city, and climb Thuy Son, where steps lead past pagodas into caves that hold shrines lit by daylight through holes in the rock. Next comes Son Tra Peninsula and Linh Ung Pagoda, whose white Lady Buddha, 67 metres tall, is visible from most of the city.

In the afternoon you reach Cam Thanh, where water coconut palms line the channels near the Thu Bon estuary, and ride a round bamboo basket boat through them. The day ends in Hoi An Ancient Town, a trading port on the UNESCO list since 1999. You walk the lanes to the Japanese Covered Bridge, eat a meal of Hoi An dishes, and have time for the shops and cafes (optional) before the drive back.

Day 3Ba Na Hills by cable car: the Golden Bridge, the French hill station and Chua Mountain

A drive west of the city brings you to the foot of Ba Na Hills, where the French built a hill station in the 1920s to escape the coastal heat. The cable car up held world records when it opened and lifts you through the cloud line. Our Da Nang guides like to go straight to the Golden Bridge, the walkway held up by two giant stone hands, before the viewing points fill.

Then the rest: the themed gardens of Le Jardin D'Amour, Linh Ung Pagoda with its white seated Buddha, a buffet of Vietnamese dishes, a second line to the summit of Chua Mountain at 1,487 metres and Linh Chua Linh Tu Temple, then French Square, a rebuilt village of stone houses, and the rides of Fantasy Park. The Debay Wine Cellar, the Wax Museum and the Alpine Coaster are extras (optional, extra cost).

Day 4North over the Hai Van Pass to Hue: Khai Dinh Tomb, the Imperial City and Thien Mu Pagoda

The longest day heads north. Instead of the tunnel, your car takes the old coast road over the Hai Van Pass, about 20 km of bends between the sea and the mountains. Coming down, you pause at Lap An Lagoon, a sheet of still water at Lang Co where families farm oysters.

Hue was the capital of the Nguyen emperors from 1802 to 1945, and the day takes in three sides of that story. Khai Dinh Tomb is the odd one out: concrete and iron, European lines, and an interior of broken glass and porcelain mosaics. After a meal of Hue dishes, your guide walks you through the Imperial City, a UNESCO site since 1993, and the Forbidden Purple City within it. Last is Thien Mu Pagoda, its seven-tiered tower on a bend of the Perfume River. You return to Da Nang in the evening.

Day 5A last morning in Da Nang and the transfer to the airport

Nothing is fixed on the final day. Depending on your flight, there may be time for a walk along the river or the beach, or a stop at Han Market for coffee, dried fruit and a last round of gifts (optional, at your own cost). Once you have packed, your driver takes you to Da Nang International Airport, a short ride from the city, where the tour ends. If you want to stay on in the centre, we can add extra nights in Da Nang or Hoi An.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does this central Vietnam itinerary fit Hoi An, Ba Na Hills and Hue into five days?

By using Da Nang as a fixed base and giving each of the three middle days one direction. Day 2 goes south to the Marble Mountains, Son Tra, Cam Thanh and Hoi An; day 3 goes up to Ba Na Hills by cable car; day 4 crosses the Hai Van Pass to Hue. The first and last days are left open for your flights.

Which airport does the tour use at the start and the end?

Da Nang International Airport at both ends. Your driver meets your arrival on day 1 and drives you back on day 5, so book a flight into Da Nang and out again. Flights are not in the price. The airport is close to the city centre, so a morning departure on day 5 is workable.

Do we sleep in Hoi An or Hue?

No. All four nights are at the same hotel in Da Nang, and Hoi An and Hue are reached as day trips. Hoi An is about 30 km south and you are there for the evening on day 2. Hue is the longer run, roughly 100 km north by the pass road, and you are back in Da Nang on the evening of day 4.

Is the Ba Na Hills cable car and the Golden Bridge included?

Yes. The price covers the return cable car, the Golden Bridge, Le Jardin D'Amour, Linh Ung Pagoda, the line up to Chua Mountain, French Square and the rides at Fantasy Park. Only the Debay Wine Cellar, the Wax Museum and the Alpine Coaster are extras, paid on the spot at about 100,000 VND each for the first two.

Is the tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, all ages are welcome and the group is small, from one to twenty people. The pace is low intensity, but two places involve steps: the climb up Thuy Son at the Marble Mountains and the stairway up to Khai Dinh Tomb in Hue. Both can be taken slowly, and the guide waits.

Can we stay in a 4-star or 5-star hotel instead?

Yes. The listed price is for Santa Luxury Hotel, a 3- to 4-star in Da Nang. Higher hotel classes are available on request, at a higher price per person. Tell us which class you want when you enquire and we quote the difference.
