Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affect millions of people every year, and many carry no obvious symptoms in the early stages. Left untreated, an STD can cause serious long-term health problems, including infertility, chronic pain, organ damage, and increased risk of certain cancers. Screening is the only reliable way to know your status, and most STDs are highly treatable and often curable when caught early.
Confidential STD screening at FV Hospital is straightforward, discreet, and delivered by experienced GP or Dermatology specialists. This programme covers the most important tests, including a fourth-generation HIV screen, a full syphilis workup, hepatitis B testing, and a PCR panel targeting 7 common STD pathogens.
At around USD 186, this is one of the most comprehensive STD screening packages available in Asia. Comparable panels in Singapore or Hong Kong typically cost 2 to 3 times more.
FV Hospital recommends STD screening for anyone in the following situations:
Screening protects not only your own health but also that of current or future partners and, in the case of pregnancy, your baby.
Syphilis screening uses two complementary blood tests. VDRL detects general markers of syphilis activity, while TPHA specifically detects antibodies to the syphilis bacterium. Together they provide a reliable screen for both active and past infection.
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a molecular test that detects the genetic material of pathogens directly, rather than waiting for the body to produce antibodies. This makes PCR highly sensitive and able to detect infections earlier than antibody tests. The 7-pathogen panel screens for the most common curable STD infections in a single sample.
This is a fourth-generation HIV test that detects two things at once: the P24 antigen (a viral protein present very early in infection) and the total antibody response. Compared with older antibody-only tests, fourth-generation testing shortens the window period, so infection can be detected as early as 2 to 6 weeks after exposure.
An additional antibody test is included to confirm the HIV Combi result and reduce the chance of a false reading.
Hepatitis B is a common bloodborne and sexually transmitted infection that can lead to chronic liver disease and liver cancer. It is more common in Southeast Asia than in most Western countries, making screening particularly relevant for international visitors.
