Hoi An to Hue: 4 modes of transport and which is best for you

Phạm Vũ Tiên Phong Oct 29, 2026 5 mins read

Hoi An to Hue runs 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the option: a direct shuttle that skips the Hai Van Pass, or a bus, train, car, or bike that rides over it.

Hoi An to Hue takes 2.5 to 5 hours depending on which option you pick, mainly because only some of them actually cross the Hai Van Pass. A direct shuttle bus skips the pass through the tunnel; a bus plus train, a private car, or a motorbike all ride over it. Here's how to get from Hoi An to Hue without guessing which option actually crosses the pass.

Hoi An to Hue: four ways to make the crossing

Most travelers pick between four options: a budget shuttle or bus using the Hai Van Tunnel, a bus plus train combo via Da Nang that rides the pass without driving, a private car that crosses it directly, or a self-ride motorbike for stopping at the viewpoints. The table below compares price, duration, and which route each takes.

Option Price Duration Route
Budget shuttle or bus 150,000 to 470,000 VND (~6 to 18 USD) 4 to 5 hrs Via Hai Van Tunnel, skips the pass
Bus + train via Da Nang 130,000 to 460,000 VND combined (~5 to 18 USD) 4 to 6 hrs total Train rides the pass, bus leg doesn't
Private car 1.45 to 4.4 million VND (~56 to 170 USD) per car 3 to 3.5 hrs Crosses the pass directly
Self-ride motorbike 120,000 to 200,000 VND/day rental (~5 to 8 USD) 3 to 3.5 hrs Rides the pass, or pays a tunnel shuttle fee

The budget shuttle: cheapest option, skips the pass

A Hoi An to Hue bus or shuttle ticket is the cheapest way to make the crossing, running 150,000 to 470,000 VND (about 6 to 18 USD) per person for a 4 to 5 hour ride. The catch is the route: most of these services use the Hai Van Tunnel, not the pass, so there's no mountain view.

Operators like Sinh Tourist and Hoi An Express run one or two daily departures from Hoi An's Old Town, usually around 8 AM with a second run in the afternoon. Our team's honest take: this option is fine for getting from A to B, but if the Hai Van Pass itself is part of why you're making this trip, skip the tunnel shuttle and pick one of the next three options instead.

Bus plus train via Da Nang: see the pass without driving

Breaking the trip into two legs lets you ride the Hai Van Pass by train instead of driving it. The first leg, Hoi An to Da Nang, takes 45 minutes to an hour by taxi, Grab, or minivan; the second, the train from Da Nang to Hue, runs about 2.5 to 3 hours along the coast.

Expect roughly 50,000 to 250,000 VND (about 2 to 10 USD) for the Hoi An to Da Nang hop by shared transport, or book a private car between Da Nang and Hoi An if you'd rather not share a van. From Da Nang Railway Station, standard trains to Hue cost about 80,000 to 210,000 VND (roughly 3 to 8 USD); our Vietnam train guide covers how to book seats and which side of the carriage to sit on for the coastal views. There's no Hoi An to Hue train service that skips this transfer, since Hoi An itself has no railway station.

Private car or motorbike over Hai Van Pass

A Hoi An to Hue private car drives the whole distance in one sitting, about 3 to 3.5 hours including a stop at the pass viewpoints. Expect 1.45 million to 4.4 million VND (roughly 56 to 170 USD) per vehicle, with the price climbing for an SUV or a larger van.

The Hoi An to Hue distance runs about 125 to 130 km, almost all of it along National Route 1, so a self-ride Hoi An to Hue motorbike trip is realistic in a single day for an experienced rider, usually 3 to 3.5 hours including photo stops. Scooter rental runs 120,000 to 200,000 VND a day (about 5 to 8 USD); riders who'd rather skip the climb can use the tunnel shuttle for about 30,000 VND per bike plus 8,000 VND per person. For the scenic stops, riding tips, and what the drive itself actually looks like, our guide to the Hai Van Pass drive covers that in detail; if you're breaking the trip with a night in the city first, our Da Nang travel guide has where to stay and eat near the station.

Sondax's 5-day Hoi An, Da Nang, and Hue tour already strings these legs together with a guide, for anyone who'd rather not coordinate the crossing solo.

FAQ

Is there a direct train from Hoi An to Hue?

No, Hoi An has no railway station, so the nearest option is boarding at Da Nang Railway Station, about 45 minutes to an hour away by taxi or Grab.

Does the shuttle bus cross the Hai Van Pass?

Most budget buses and shuttles use the Hai Van Tunnel instead, so they skip the pass entirely. Only the train, the private car, and the motorbike options ride over it.

How long does it take to get from Hoi An to Hue?

Total time runs 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the option: about 3 to 3.5 hours by private car or motorbike, 4 to 5 hours by direct shuttle, or 4 to 6 hours combining a bus and a train.

Is the Hai Van Pass worth doing by motorbike?

It's a popular ride for experienced riders, with clear views on dry days and steep hairpin turns that reward a slower pace. If you're not confident riding in Vietnam, hiring a private car or joining a guided tour gets you the same views without self-riding.

Should I stop in Da Nang on the way?

Many travelers break the trip with a night in Da Nang, especially with the bus and train option, since trains only run a few times a day and timing it tightly can mean a long wait at the station.

Doing the Da Nang to Hue leg by car?

Sondax runs a private car over Hai Van Pass from Da Nang to Hue with an English-speaking driver. Pair it with a quick taxi or Grab from Hoi An to Da Nang first, and it covers the rest of the crossing without a shared shuttle.
