Direct limousine vans and daytime buses are the cheapest way from Sapa to Ha Giang, at about 300,000 VND (12 USD) for roughly 235 km and 6.5 hours, while a private car costs about 2.5 to 5.5 million VND for the whole vehicle and can be an hour quicker. Both run direct, so you do not need to go back through Hanoi. Since July 2025 Ha Giang sits inside Tuyen Quang province, though tickets and signs still say Ha Giang. Sapa to Ha Giang: four ways compared

Four options cover the 235 km from Sapa to Ha Giang: a direct limousine van or daytime bus from 300,000 VND, a private car from about 2.5 million VND, or a motorbike on the direct road or the longer border route. Vans and cars take 5.5 to 6.5 hours; the border route by bike takes 2 to 5 days.

Sapa to Ha Giang limousine van and daytime bus

Direct buses and limousine vans between the two towns cost about 300,000-350,000 VND (12 to 14 USD) and take around 6.5 hours, mostly on morning and early-afternoon departures. 12Go lists about 13 departures a day between 7 AM and 11 PM, so the route has more choice than it used to.

Operators that appear in 12Go listings include Bang Phan, Quang Giang, Daiichi Travel and Vin Bus. You can book through Vexere, 12Go or Baolau, through your hotel, or directly with a bus company at its Sapa office. Pickup varies: some trips collect from hotels, others leave from a Sapa bus station, and 12Go names Sapa Ha Son Bus Station for some. Ask for the Ha Giang drop-off point too, because the stop may not be near your homestay.

Treat the listed time as a best case. One guide puts the schedule at 5.5 hours and real trips at about 6.5, so avoid booking a tight onward connection on the same day.

Sapa to Ha Giang by private car

A private car costs about 2.5 to 5.5 million VND (100 to 210 USD) for the whole vehicle and takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours, depending on stops. Split between three or four people that is roughly 625,000 to 1.8 million VND each, two to six times a bus seat, but you choose the departure time and where to stop.

That freedom is the main reason to pay for it. Bac Ha's market runs on Sundays, so a Sunday departure lets you add it on the way. The rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi also sit along the road, and a fixed-schedule bus will not stop for either. Hotels and local agencies quote private cars, and prices differ between listings, so ask two or three before you settle. Sapa to Ha Giang motorbike: direct road or border route

Riding takes either a long day on the direct 235 km road or 2 to 5 days on the 355 km border route through Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi. The border route includes rough and gravel sections, and landslides or roadworks after heavy rain can slow it considerably.

Vietnam Coracle's route guide dates from 2014 with an update in 2018, and recent reader comments describe muddy stretches under repair, so ask your homestay about current conditions before you commit. You also need the right licence. According to Viet Nam News (May 2026), Vietnam accepts International Driving Permits issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention, while permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, including those from the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, are not valid here.

If you are not confident on long mountain rides, take the bus or a car to Ha Giang city and rent a bike there for the Ha Giang Loop routes. You arrive less tired, with the riding still ahead of you.

Ha Giang border permit: what to know when arriving from Sapa

Foreign visitors riding the northern loop around the former districts of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac are expected to carry a border-area permit, whichever way they arrive. The official fee is 10 USD per person (about 260,000 VND), and operators quote 230,000 to 300,000 VND when they arrange it for you.

The rule is not new. What happened in June 2026 was an inspection drive: Tuyen Quang's immigration police checked passports, visas and guest registrations at homestays in 17 border communes from 3 June, for about a week, and also checked vehicles and drivers carrying tourists (Baotintuc, 4 June 2026). The permit is issued in Ha Giang, not in Sapa, so arrange it with your homestay as soon as you arrive.
