Tour overview

On this Vietnam tour 7 days are enough to see all three regions, because two included domestic flights replace the long road legs. The south gives you Cho Lon, the Saigon River, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta by boat. The centre is Da Nang: the Marble Mountains, sunset on Son Tra and a day at Ba Na Hills.

The north closes the week with the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison and a Ha Long Bay day cruise. Our other seven-day trips stay in two regions; this one is for a first visit that should include the centre, in a group of up to 20 and 3-star hotels.

Itinerary

Day by day itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City: Cho Lon, Thien Hau Pagoda and the river by water bus

A driver is waiting at Tan Son Nhat with your name on a board and takes you into District 1. The first stop is Cho Lon, the Chinese quarter in District 5, where the market lanes sell dried seafood, herbs and fabric by the roll. A few streets away stands Thien Hau Pagoda, built by Cantonese traders for the goddess of the sea, its roof crowded with ceramic figures and its courtyard hung with coils of incense.

Later you board the water bus at Bach Dang Harbor for a run along the Saigon River. From the open deck you see Bitexco Financial Tower and, further upstream, Landmark 81, the tallest building in Vietnam. The driver then takes you back for the evening, which is free.

Day 2Cu Chi Tunnels in the morning, the Mekong islands by boat, sampan and bicycle in the afternoon

An early drive takes you northwest to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the underground network dug during the war. After a short film you walk the site with your guide, look into the living quarters and command posts, and crawl a widened stretch of tunnel if you wish. Tea and boiled cassava, the staple of the people who lived down here, are served before you leave.

From Cu Chi the road turns south to My Tho on the Tien River, one arm of the Mekong. A motor boat takes you out to four islands, where you switch to a hand-rowed sampan for the narrow canals under the water palms, cycle a lane through the village, see coconut candy being made and taste the season's fruit with honey tea. You are back in Saigon by evening.

Day 3Fly to Da Nang: the Marble Mountains, Am Phu Cave and sunset on Son Tra

After the morning flight north to Da Nang, a driver takes you down the coast road to the Marble Mountains, five limestone and marble outcrops named after the elements. Steps lead up Thuy Son to pagodas and shrines set into the rock. At its foot is Am Phu Cave, laid out as a Buddhist vision of hell and judgement, with a narrow climb out towards the light.

In the afternoon you cross the city to the Son Tra Peninsula, known locally as Monkey Mountain, where the Lady Buddha statue stands 67 metres tall and can be seen from most of the beach. The road continues up the peninsula to a viewpoint, and you stay for sunset over the bay and the city lights coming on below.

Day 4Up to Ba Na Hills: the Golden Bridge, the flower garden and the French village

A drive of under an hour west brings you to the foot of Ba Na Hills, a French-era hill station at around 1,400 metres. The cable car, one of the longest in the world, climbs through cloud forest for about twenty minutes. At the top you walk out on the Golden Bridge, a footpath opened in 2018 that appears to rest in two giant stone hands, and wander the terraces of Le Jardin D'Amour flower garden.

Higher up are Linh Ung Pagoda, with its tall seated Buddha, and Linh Chua Linh Tu Temple on the summit of Chua Mountain. The French Square recreates a village of cobbled lanes and shuttered houses, and Fantasy Park has indoor rides and games. The Debay wine cellar can be visited (optional, extra cost). Our guides tell everyone to bring a layer: the summit is several degrees cooler than the coast.

Day 5Fly to Hanoi: Tran Quoc Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo Prison

A short flight takes you from Da Nang to Hanoi, and a driver meets you at Noi Bai for the run into the capital. The city day starts at Tran Quoc Pagoda, which stands on a causeway island in West Lake and is the oldest in the city. Next is the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and home to the country's first university, with its five courtyards and stone stelae carried on the backs of turtles.

The last stop is Hoa Lo Prison, built by the French at the end of the 19th century and later used for American pilots, who called it the Hanoi Hilton. The evening is free in the Old Quarter. A guided walking food tour of six or seven dishes, with a stop at Train Street, can be added (optional, extra cost).

Day 6Ha Long Bay day cruise: Surprising Cave, Luon Cave by kayak and Titop Island

Ha Long is about two and a half hours east of Hanoi by road. At the harbour you board a day cruise ship and sail out into the bay, where close to two thousand limestone islands rise from the water, with a buffet meal served as the boat moves among them. The first landing is Sung Sot, the Surprising Cave, three chambers of stalactites and stalagmites inside Bo Hon Island.

Back on the water you take a kayak or a bamboo boat through the low arch of Luon Cave into a lagoon closed in by cliffs. At Titop Island you can swim from the beach or climb the steps to the peak for a view across the bay. The afternoon ends with tea, cakes, wine and fruit on the sundeck as the sun goes down, and your driver brings you back to Hanoi in the evening.

Day 7Hanoi: a free morning and the transfer to Noi Bai Airport

The last morning is yours. If your flight leaves late enough, there is time for a final coffee in the Old Quarter, or for the shops that were closed when you walked past the night before. Your driver then collects you and takes you to Noi Bai International Airport for the flight home.

If you would rather stay on, we can add nights in Hanoi or a short trip to Sapa or Ninh Binh before you fly; tell us when you book and we will fit it in.

Before you go

  • The tour starts at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City and ends at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, so book an international ticket into the south and out of the north, and send us your flight times for the two airport transfers.
  • The price is for the 3-star class: Prague Hotel in Saigon, Santa Luxury Hotel in Da Nang and Diamond Legend Hotel in Hanoi, or similar hotels of the same standard. A 4-star class (Harmony Sai Gon Hotel, Serene Beach Hotel, MK Premier Boutique Hotel) and a 5-star class (The Myst Dong Khoi, Radisson Hotel Danang, Apricot Hotel) are available on request at a higher price.
  • The guided programme on day 1 depends on your arrival time; a late flight means the Cho Lon visit and the water bus are shortened or moved. Day 7 has no programme other than the airport transfer.
  • Pack closed shoes for Cu Chi and the Mekong bike lane, swimwear and a towel for Titop Island, a hat and sun cream for the boat days, and a warm layer for Ba Na Hills, which sits at around 1,400 metres.
  • Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are cool and grey from December to February, and Da Nang gets most of its rain in October and November; Saigon is warm all year.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the tour ends.

Cancellation policy

If you cancel, we refund what you have paid minus a cancellation fee. The fee depends on how long before your arrival date you cancel:

  • More than 60 days before: 10%
  • 30 to 59 days before: 20%
  • 15 to 29 days before: 40%
  • 8 to 14 days before: 80%
  • 7 days or less before, or no-show: 100%

The two domestic flight tickets are booked in your name once the tour is confirmed, and any airline charge for cancelling them is added to the fee above.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a Vietnam tour 7 days long enough to cover all three regions?

Yes, provided you fly between them. This itinerary gives two days to the south, two to the centre and three to the north, and the day 3 flight up to Da Nang and the day 5 flight on to Hanoi take about an hour each, so no day disappears into a long road or rail leg.

Where does the tour start and finish?

The first pickup is at Tan Son Nhat, Ho Chi Minh City's airport, on day 1, and the last drop-off is at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi on day 7. Book an open-jaw international ticket, into the south and out of the north, and send us your flight times so the two transfers match.

Are the two domestic flights included in the price?

Yes. Both legs, Saigon to Da Nang on day 3 and Da Nang up to Hanoi on day 5, are in the price, in economy class with 20 kg of checked baggage, and the airport transfers at each end are included too. We book the tickets in your name once the tour is confirmed.

Do we travel as a group, and how big is it?

The group never exceeds 20 travellers, and an English-speaking guide leads the sightseeing days. The evenings, the last morning and the rest of day 1 are your own time. If you would prefer a private departure for your own party, ask when you enquire and we will quote for it.

Can we stay in better hotels than the 3-star ones?

Yes. The price shown is for the 3-star class: Prague Hotel in Saigon, Santa Luxury Hotel in Da Nang and Diamond Legend Hotel in Hanoi. A 4-star class (Harmony Sai Gon Hotel, Serene Beach Hotel, MK Premier Boutique Hotel) and a 5-star class (The Myst Dong Khoi, Radisson Hotel Danang, Apricot Hotel) are available on request at a higher price.

Is the tour suitable for children and for older travellers?

Yes. The tour welcomes all ages and the activity level is low: the hardest parts are the steps at the Marble Mountains, the optional climb to the top of Titop Island and a short tunnel crawl at Cu Chi that nobody has to do. The bike ride on the Mekong island is flat and short, and a guide stays with the group.
