Tour overview

This Vietnam honeymoon package gives a couple one week that begins in the mountains and ends by the sea. Day one is quiet: the only fixed appointment is a massage for the two of you. From Hanoi you go up to Sapa for a walk down to Cat Cat village and, next morning, the cable car and 600 stone steps to the top of Fansipan.

A flight then takes you south to Da Nang for three nights on the coast. One day is Hoi An: a basket boat at Cam Thanh, the old town on foot and a lantern set afloat on the river after dark. The other pairs the Marble Mountains with sunset from the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills. It runs for a booking of two, with a free afternoon and a last morning kept for yourselves.

Itinerary

Day by day itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Hanoi, with a massage for two to shake off the long flight

A driver with your names on a sign meets you at Noi Bai International Airport and drives you into Hanoi, about 45 minutes with normal traffic. There is one appointment in the diary and it is a gentle one: an hour of traditional Vietnamese massage at Sen Tai Thu, a spa in the city. You each choose the style you prefer, with hot herbal compresses, aromatherapy oils or foot reflexology on offer, so a stiff back and tired feet can be treated side by side.

The rest of the day is yours. Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter make the easy first walk, and an early night is no bad idea: tomorrow starts with the road to the mountains.

Day 2The road north to Sapa and a walk down to Cat Cat village

You leave Hanoi for the north-west, on the expressway to Lao Cai by the Chinese border and then up the switchbacks to Sapa, a hill town at around 1,500 metres that the French laid out as a summer station a century ago. On arrival there is a welcome drink and a short briefing on the two mountain days.

The afternoon is a walk with a local guide down to Cat Cat, the Hmong village at the bottom of the valley beneath the town. The path drops past terraced fields and wooden houses to a stream where a waterfall tumbles beside an old French bridge, and the village workshops show hemp weaving and indigo dyeing on the way. It is downhill most of the way, with steps, so take it at whatever pace suits you both.

Day 3Fansipan by cable car and 600 steps to the summit, then back to Hanoi

Fansipan is the roof of Indochina: 3,143 metres, higher than any peak in Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia, and the cable car turns what used to be a two-day trek into a morning. The ride takes about 20 minutes and lands you at a station near 2,800 metres, where a group of pagodas and a large bronze Buddha sit on the ridge above the cloud.

From there the last stretch is on foot: roughly 600 stone steps to the summit marker, about an hour and a half there and back at a steady pace, with the Hoang Lien range falling away on both sides when the sky is clear. You ride the same cable car down and your driver takes you back to Hanoi, five to six hours by road, for the evening.

Day 4Fly south to Da Nang and a free afternoon on the coast

A short flight, a little over an hour in the air, takes you from Hanoi to Da Nang, the largest city on the central coast. The airport sits close to the centre, so the drive in is quick, and nothing is scheduled for the rest of the day.

Use it as the pause between the mountains and the two full days to come. My Khe beach runs along the city's eastern edge, the bridges over the Han River light up after dark and the Dragon Bridge breathes fire on weekend evenings (all optional, on your own). It is the one afternoon of the week with no guide and no plan, which is rather the point of it.

Day 5Hoi An: basket boats at Cam Thanh, the old town on foot and a lantern on the Hoai River

A drive of about 45 minutes south brings you to Cam Thanh, where channels of water coconut palm run out towards the mouth of the Thu Bon river. Local fishermen take you out in a round bamboo basket boat, show you how they cast a net and paddle you through the tunnels of palm fronds.

Hoi An Ancient Town follows, a trading port that kept its 17th- and 18th-century streets and has been UNESCO-listed since 1999. With your guide you see the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese traders, one of the old merchant houses (Phung Hung or Tan Ky) and the Japanese Covered Bridge, then wander the lanes and handicraft shops at your own pace. After a meal of Hoi An specialities you step into a small wooden boat on the Hoai River and release a flower lantern onto the water, the town's old wish-making custom, before the drive back to Da Nang.

Day 6Thuy Son’s caves, the Lady Buddha on Son Tra and sunset on the Golden Bridge

The morning starts at the Marble Mountains, five limestone and marble hills just south of the city. You climb the steps of Thuy Son past pagodas and into Am Phu Cave, whose chambers stage the Buddhist underworld below and a climb towards heaven above, lit by a shaft of daylight at the top. Then the car runs out along Son Tra Peninsula to Linh Ung Pagoda, where the 67-metre Lady Buddha looks back across the bay to the city.

After a midday break you drive west to Ba Na Hills and ride the cable car up through the cloud to the old French hill station. The Golden Bridge, a walkway carried on two huge stone hands, is timed for late afternoon so that you watch the sun go down from it. There is time to walk the French Village, a rebuilt street of stone houses around a square, before the ride down and the drive back to Da Nang.

Day 7A last morning by the sea, then Da Nang airport and the flight home

Nothing is fixed on the final morning. Depending on your flight time there may be room for a walk on the beach, a coffee by the river or a last look round Han Market for dried fruit and gifts (optional, on your own). Then it is a short ride with your driver to Da Nang International Airport, a few kilometres from the centre, where the tour ends.

If you would rather not leave the coast yet, we can add nights in Da Nang or Hoi An, or carry on to Hue over the Hai Van Pass, when you book.

Before you go

  • The tour starts at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and ends at Da Nang International Airport, so book an open-jaw international ticket (into Hanoi, out of Da Nang) or ask us to add a flight back to Hanoi or on to Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Rooms are at Diamond Legend Hotel in Hanoi, The View Sapa Hotel in Sapa and Santa Luxury Hotel in Da Nang, all 3- to 4-star, or a hotel of the same standard. Higher hotel classes are available on request.
  • Choose your massage for day 1 when you book or on arrival: herbal compress, aromatherapy or reflexology, and you can each pick a different one.
  • Pack shoes with grip for the Cat Cat path and the Fansipan steps, and a warm layer: the summit sits at 3,143 metres and is often ten degrees colder than Sapa town, and Ba Na Hills is cooler than the coast. Cover shoulders and knees for the pagodas on Fansipan and at Son Tra.
  • The afternoon of day 4 and the morning of day 7 have no guided programme, so plan them as time for the two of you.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the tour ends.

If you cancel, we refund what you have paid minus a cancellation fee. The fee depends on how long before your arrival date you cancel:

  • 15 to 29 days before: 40%

  • 7 days or less before, or no-show: 100%

The domestic flight tickets are booked in your names once the tour is confirmed, and any airline charge for cancelling them is added to the fee above.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is this Vietnam honeymoon package private, or do we join other travellers?

It is listed as a group tour with a group size of 1 to 20, and a booking for two is enough to run it. Whether anyone else travels on your dates depends on other bookings, so if you want the car and guide to yourselves for the whole week, tell us when you book and we will confirm what your dates look like.

Which airports do we fly into and out of?

Hanoi in, Da Nang out. Your driver meets you at Noi Bai on day 1, and on day 7 you leave from Da Nang International Airport. The simplest plan is an open-jaw international ticket, flying into Hanoi and home from Da Nang. If your airline does not serve Da Nang, we can add a flight back to Hanoi or on to Ho Chi Minh City.

Do we pay extra for the flight to Da Nang?

No, that ticket is part of the price: an economy seat in your names from Hanoi to Da Nang on day 4, with the airport transfers at both ends. International flights are not included, and the Hanoi to Sapa leg is by road in both directions, so there is only the one flight to pack for.

How much walking is there in Sapa?

Two walks, neither of them a full trek. On day 2 you walk down to Cat Cat village with a local guide, mostly downhill with steps. On day 3 the cable car does the climb up Fansipan and you finish with about 600 stone steps to the summit, around an hour and a half there and back. Anyone of normal fitness can manage both at a slow pace.

Do we sleep in Hoi An?

No, all three nights on the coast are in Da Nang, about 45 minutes from Hoi An by road. Day 5 is spent in and around Hoi An until after dark, with the lantern boat on the Hoai River as the last stop before you drive back. If you would rather stay in the old town itself, ask us when you book and we will quote the change.

When is the best time of year for this route?

March to May and September to November suit both ends of the trip: Sapa is clear and mild and the central coast is mostly dry. From December to February Sapa can drop close to freezing and Fansipan is often in cloud, so bring a proper warm layer, while the coast is cool and grey. October and November bring the heaviest rain to Da Nang and Hoi An.
